Leave your comfort zone is a familiar phrase to me. Starting a new career takes courage and becoming a postpartum doula falls into this category. We work privately in the home with only the families. It is up to us to nurture, educate, assess and refer appropriately. Many new doulas are a bit fearful and unsure of themselves as they begin their new profession and it is quite normal to feel this way. The only way to overcome this is to take a leap of faith and get out of your comfort zone.
In my life I have experienced this fear quite often as I learn, grow and stretch beyond my comfort level. I sometimes think “will I ever get there”. I guess it depends on where you want to go and what you want to achieve. For me I want to keep growing and become better and better. This does not mean I am dissatisfied with life or my journey and I do not struggle for perfection. I embrace the challenges of my life, my career, my family and my passions, whether they are in the work place or on the tennis court.
Courage is defined in the dictionary as “the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action.” As doulas we need to have courage and move through any fears that arise. You need to get out of your comfort zone and do something every day that is productive and bringing you closer to your goals; doing nothing will only fester, stop the flow and continue to cause you distress.
Which quote do you want to live by? (authors of quotes unknown)
“by doing nothing, you become nothing”
“start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible”
Leave your comfort zone and make 2017 your best year ever!
